Adolescent Therapy

Adolescence is a time where identity is being explored, boundaries are being expanded and sometimes pushed to points that can be difficult for the teen or for their parents. We know more and more about brain development and growth, and we know that adolescence is a critical time where brain connections are strengthened or “pruned” dependent on experiences.

In my work with teens I bring a keen listening ear and strive to provide an accurate mirroring experience that allows for the teen to become more familiar with their interior landscape. Providing a space where all things can be discussed and thought about together, allows for the adolescent to identify and embrace those aspects of themselves that they value and work to minimize counter-productive behaviors and self-defeating ideas.   Therapy can provide the safe space to address what may feel like out-sized emotions, to make sense of and work through complicated interpersonal challenges, to develop more adaptive coping strategies, and to be a place where creative and playful exchanges can lead to self-discovery and the improved ability to make healthy, productive choices.

Parents are of course an integral part of every child’s life. Adolescence can be a time where expectations and relationship dynamics need some tweaking. The relationship between parents and their teens can be a spot where conflict lands. Therapy can help facilitate improved communication and improved understanding, leading to a greater sense of connection.
